1st step to take if device is having problems?

The 1st Step is to pull the battery out of the device and leave it out for about 30 seconds. This will clear the internal memory and will solve many, many issues.
1. Leave the BB powered ON.
2. Pull the battery
3. Leave it out for10- 30 seconds
4. Replace battery and let device boot
5. See if the problem has been resolved.

How do you select multiple emails to delete at one time?
In the message inbox hold the Shift key down and roll the track pad to select multiple emails, then push track pad in again and select delete.

How do you copy and paste text?
Position the cursor in front of the text you want to copy, press the Shift key and roll the track padl to highlight the text you want to copy. Once the text is highlighted push track pad in and select copy. Go to where you want to paste the text and push track pad in and select Paste.

How do you quickly capitalize a letter in the middle of a sentence?
Hold down the letter for 2 seconds and it will change from lower case to upper case.

How do you quickly add a period at the end of a sentence and make the next letter capitalized?
Press the space bar twice at the end of a sentence and it will input a period and move over one space and capitalize the next letter.

Can you call a number from an email if the number is in the body of the email?
Yes. You can also highlight a web link and go to that link by pushing the track pad in selecting get link.

How do quickly get to your newest message and your oldest messages?
Go to your Messages then press the letter "T" and it will take you to the Top of the list. Pressing "B" will take you to the bottom. Press the space bar will move you down one screen of messages at a time.

How do you enter an email address quickly?
When you are entering an email address, you can simply click the "space" key to enter the "@" symbol and the "." symbol.

How do I set up Level 1 Messaging?
Level 1 Messaging is used to differentiate between regular emails and normal emails. So for example you want to be notified right away when your boss emails. You can set any email from your boss be marked as Level 1 and in the ‘Profiles’ menu set a different ring tone for Level 1 messages. To turn on PIN Messages as being level 1 messages, from Options in your email browser, choose General Options and then set "Make PIN Messages Level 1" to YES. Set your ring profile to use a different ring sound for Level 1 messages.

How do I change the sort order of my contacts ?
In CONTACTS, chose Options from the menu. Change the setting Sort Order to your preference; Last Name, First Name or Company.

What is the difference between the Internet browser and the Blackberry Browser?
The Internet Browser is a WAP Browser that displays web pages that are written for viewing by mobile devices. The Blackberry Browser is a HTML Browser that can view most web pages through the MUOT Blackberry Enterprise Server. Some complex web pages may not be displayed correctly or only part of the web page will be displayed. The Blackberry Browser is behind our firewall and will allow you to bookmark pages such as the Clinical On Call Schedule. (The Blackberry Browser requires the handheld be activated on the MUOT Blackberry Enterprise Server).

How do you enter a new web site address on the Blackberry?

Go to the Internet or Blackberry Browser and push track pad in and select "Go To." Type in the URL and roll the track pad down to OK.

How do you bookmark a web page?
Once you are on web page that you want to bookmark push track pad in and select Add Bookmark.

How do you change Font size on the Blackberry?
Select the Options icon on the Blackberry and then select Screen/Keyboard. Then select Font Size and push track pad in and select Change option roll the track pad up or down to make the text larger or smaller. Select the size you want, then push track pad in and select save.

How do I unclutter my home screen and hide icons of applications I don't use?
On the Blackberry home screen, scroll the wheel over an icon you do not use, hold the ALT key (to left of "z") and then press the menu/wheel to invoke the selected icon menu, and choose Hide Icon. The icon disappears from the home screen. You can later choose Show All to show all hidden icons. If you want to put the icon back, while Show All is checked, move over the hidden icon and press ALT and the menu/wheel and then uncheck the Hide Icon choice.

How do I move icons around on the home screen so I have the ones I use frequently on the top line?
On the Blackberry home screen, scroll the wheel over an icon you want to move, hold the ALT key (to left of "z") and press the menu/wheel to invoke the selected icon menu and choose Move Icon. The icon will have a box appear around it. Roll the menu/wheel to where you want the icon to sit and press the menu/wheel to drop it there.

How can I extend my Blackberry's battery life?

Here are some ways of extending battery life.
1. Use the Auto On/Off feature (Options –> Auto On/Off) to have the device automatically power off and power on overnight.
2. When wireless coverage is not needed users should “Turn Wireless Off”.
3. Within the Profiles application on the device try to minimize the number of notifications for often-occurring events like new email messages. Chose between tone, vibrate or LED notifications to minimize the absolute number of notification types for such common events.
4. For new Bluetooth-enabled BlackBerry devices when the user is not using Bluetooth they should “Turn Bluetooth Off”

Charging

  • Charge BlackBerry® smartphone as much as possible
  • Use wall chargers as the preferred charging method

Media

  • Reduce volume
  • Use headphones
  • Load media using the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager (Avoids resizing)
  • Turn off equalizer settings (Media – Options)

Browsing

  • Visit mobile sites where applicable
  • Turn Repeat Animations to a lower setting (Browser – Options – General Properties)
  • Close browser when finished using (close with ESC key, not red End key)

Screen/Keyboard

  • Reduce Backlight Timeout (Options – Screen/Keyboard)
  • Reduce Backlight Brightness (Options – Screen/Keyboard)
  • Holster smartphone (turns off LCD automatically)
  • Set Audible Roll to mute (Options – Screen/Keyboard)
  • Key Tone Off (Options – Screen/Keyboard)
  • Use a sleeve when storing the smartphone in a pocket

Network Connections

  • Turn off unused connections when not in use, i.e. GPS, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®
  • Use Auto On/Off
  • Use single mode only (1XEV, 2G only, 3G only)

Shortcuts

  • Use shortcuts instead of activating Java® menus (Browser – Options – Browser Configuration)

Camera

  • Turn off flash (Camera – Options)
  • Set picture size to Small (Camera – Options)
  • Set Color Effect to Normal (Camera – Options)
  • Set Picture Quality to Normal (Camera – Options)

Applications

  • When exiting, be sure to close the app, not leave it running in the background (close with ESC key, not red End key)
  • Log out of third-party applications when they are not needed (Instant Messaging, etc.)

Indicators

  • Set Audible notification to Off (Profiles)
  • Turn off coverage LED (Profiles)

 Lastly, when you are not using your device put it in the holster as this will power off the LCD screen to conserve power!

Can I use my blackberry if its dark?
The Blackberry display can be backlit to allow reading messages in the dark. To get the light to come on, hit the backlight button usually in the lower right of the keyboard. You have a backlit keyboard as well so you can type in the dark.

What are PIN messages?
PIN messages are messages that are sent from one Blackberry to another Blackberry without going through the email system. (Similar to Instant Messaging). They are not encrypted.

How do you send a PIN message?
Select messages and push track pad in select PIN Message or select a name from your Address Book that has PIN number saved in it. Then type out the subject and message just like you would with a normal message and push track pad in select send.

How do I save the PIN Number when someone sent the email via it?
First open the email on the blackberry, move the cursor to highlight the "From," click on the track pad once and select "Show Qualified Address." Highlight and copy the PIN Number by holding down the NUM or the Shift key and moving the track pad. Once the PIN Number is highlighted and selected, click on the track pad and select "Copy Selection." Then create a contact address and paste the PIN Number in the Pin: field.

How do I add the Pin to a Blackberry contact that already exists?
Edit the contact address and add the pin to the "PIN:" field.

Shortcuts for typing your PIN or Phone Number
RIM has included a few shortcuts to make it easier to type out your phone number, and PIN. While composing an email type ‘mypin’ to display your PIN, and ‘mynumber’ to display your phone number.

Master Clear or Wipe
Use this if you want to erase all of the info off of the Blackberry device, for instance, when the Blackberry may have been used by one employee and now that device is going to be given to another employee to use. Select Options, Security, push the track pad in and choose "WIPE HANDHELD". It will notify you that all info will be erased. The unit will power off and then back on and all the information will be erased (Email, contacts, calendar, etc).

Device Log
To display the log of all activity that occurs on your device, hold down the ALT (right of the "z" key) and type LGLG and release the ALT. A log viewer will show up. To send the log to someone to troubleshoot, click on the track/menu and choose copy days contents. Then you can go into your email and email the log by choosing a contact and subject and in the body of the message click on the track/menu button and choose past.
